Is There Value in Training Scientific Generalists For Positions at the Edge of Academia?

چکیده
The explosion of scientific knowledge after the Second World War has progressed hand in hand with an increasing trend towards specialization in the training of scientists (Bode et al. 1949; Bush 1945). This trend is hardly surprising and is perhaps an inevitability. As scientific advances build upon previous understanding, individuals who aim to work on the frontiers of research must progress through many levels of knowledge acquisition and training before they can become leaders in the field and supervise their own students.

The need for academic generalists
Academia should be willing to shoulder some of the responsibility for the current dearth of new therapeutic drugs. Our research funding is predicated on the assumption that it will bring value to society, but our emphasis on scientific specialization hinders our ability to add value when a broader vision is required. A solution is the creation of an academy of science generalists motivated to b...

Let's face it: not all PhD students and postdocs will become lab heads. Every few years, the National Science Foundation surveys doctorate recipients in the USA about their career progression, and their latest published data (collected in 2006) show that only about one quarter of biomedical science PhDs held tenured or tenure-track positions (see Box 1). If graduate and postdoctoral training ar...
متن کاملShould we train scientific generalists?
I examine the topic of training scientific generalists. To focus the discussion, I propose the creation of a new graduate program, analogous in structure to existing MD/PhD programs, aimed at training a critical mass of scientific researchers with substantial intellectual breadth. In addition to completing the normal requirements for a PhD, students would undergo an intense, several year traini...

Academic generalists are unique and important members of the pediatric landscape.(1) Academic general pediatrics (AGP) is not considered a subspecialty, because it adheres to generalist values and embraces a wide range of clinical activities. Nonetheless, academic generalists engage in important scholarly efforts, contribute extensively to the education of new pediatricians, and must be prepare...

Continuous decline in Lake Urmia water levels In recent years, the decline of rainfall and river flows and constant droughts has become the main concern of the people and the people. To study climate change and increase of temperature in the catchment area of Lake Urmia, two factors for measuring the temperature and properties of satellite images were used which indicate the importance of lan...
